Project Description

MelCONNX (Laing O’Rourke and the Public Transport Authority (PTA)) are leading this million dollar project which aims to increase connectivity within the Perth Metropolitan Area while providing greener transport solutions to the public.

GFWA’s contract covered the 52 bored mono piles providing the foundations to the viaduct. Our team mobilised in November of 2022 and poured the last pile at the end of May 2023. The 52 1,800mm diameter bored piles had lengths varying between 20 and 45 metres.

Working next to the rail: a safety challenge

The Viaduct acts as a link between the existing Bayswater train station and Tonkin Highway. Out of the 52 piles, 27 were within the rail corridor which meant our entire site team had to take on extra training to be able to work safely within the area. Of those 27 piles, 17 were completed during a 3-week rail shutdown (24/7) which had our team working around the clock with a day shift and night shift to ensure the critical piles were poured in time. The other ten were completed while the trains were running, and the OLE (Overhead line equipment) was electrified which meant extra attention had to be paid during lifting and piling activities to ensure our work wasn’t affecting train traffic and vice versa.

In addition to that, our work area was very tight. We had to stay 3 metres away from the existing rail and OLE at all times and couldn’t do any lifting above the residential road running next to the worksite. Our engineers and site crew did a great job of scheduling the works and organizing the work area in a way that allowed people and plant to move and work safely.
In the end, the works were completed safely, with no quality issues and 3 weeks ahead of schedule which represents a major success for the client and for GFWA.
